Who is Causing Your Storms?

Lesson 9

Let’s look at Mark 4:35-41 (AMPC). This is what happened directly before Jesus and the disciples came into contact with the demoniac and the spirit of Legion.

When evening came, Jesus instructed them to go over to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes. Jesus was in one boat and other smaller boats were with them. (Other people are in the storm with you.) Then a furious storm arose and the waves kept beating into the boats so that they were becoming filled with water, but Jesus was in the stern of the boat sleeping. It says, “…they awoke Him and said to Him, ‘Master, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Hush now. Be still. Be muzzled.’ And the wind ceased, sank as to rest as if exhausted by its beating and there was immediately a great calm. A perfect peacefulness. He said to them, ‘Why are you so timid and fearful? How is it that you have no faith, (no firm relying trust)?’”

Jesus and the disciples encountered a fierce storm. How do I know that this storm was not caused by a weather front, a severe change in the atmospheric pressure, or something in the natural? The scripture shows us in the way that Jesus treated that storm, “Jesus rose up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now. Be still. Be muzzled.”

The word “rebuked” is used in many places when Jesus commands a demon. One example is in Mark 1:24 (AMPC) where Jesus is going to the synagogue and He encounters a man with a demon. The demon actually begins to speak to Him saying, “‘What have you to do with us Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. The Holy One of God.’ And Jesus rebuked him saying, ‘Hush up. (be muzzled, be gagged) and come out of him.’” Then the man was delivered. He not only rebuked him, but he told the demon, “Hush up, be muzzled, be gagged.”

Why is Jesus telling the winds and the waves to stop talking and the storm to “Hush up?” Because the winds and the waves weren’t coming from a natural source. It was a demonically created storm. Demons speak. That demon was speaking to Jesus. “I know who you are, you’re the Holy One of God,” and Jesus was telling Him to shut up!

Legion was the most talkative demon in the Bible. What did he say? “Oh Jesus, what is there in common? Oh Jesus, my name is Legion. Oh Jesus, don’t torment us. Oh Jesus, don’t send us out of the region. Oh Jesus, send us in the pigs.” Talk, talk, chatter, chatter. Legion knew Jesus was coming, so he spoke a storm into existence to stop him from getting there!

Legion knew that Jesus was coming to his region. Mark 5:1 tells us that as soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, Legion was waiting for Jesus on the shore! He was trying to stop him from coming by commanding a storm. That’s why Jesus not only rebuked the storm, which is the word used to deal with demons, but He told the storm, “Hush. Be Still. Be Muzzled.” In other words, stop talking and making decrees and commands that would cause this storm to try to take Jesus and his disciples out!

Legion creates hurricane level storms in your life because he’s trying to kill you! The enemy’s out to steal, kill, and destroy. He wants to kill you, or make you wish that you had never been born! Look at what happened to Job; the enemy created a storm in the natural and then it killed all of his children. Job was cursing the day he was born and wishing he would never have seen the light of day in all of Chapter 3. That’s how badly a storm can wound us.

Look at what happened to the disciples. That storm was so fierce that the waves were about to sink the boat. They cried, “Master, do you not care that we are perishing?” They believed they were going to die. If Jesus hadn’t been in the boat, they, and the people in the other boats probably would have.

Legion wants to stop you from getting to your destination. You have a destiny in God, and the enemy will work overtime to prevent you from moving into it. Look what happened when Jesus overcame the storm. A man that was controlled and ruined by Legion, was healed and delivered. Legion was kicked out of his position of authority in the Gadarenes, and regional revival broke as the former demoniac stepped into his destiny. He became a powerful evangelist that spread the good news of the gospel in the entire region of the Decapolis!

Again, out of space! Next time we will continue to discuss Legion’s dastardly plans for us!
