The Great Reversal
by Jean Mulquin
“Then Peter chimed in, ‘We left everything and followed you. What do we get out of it?’
Jesus replied, ‘Yes, you have followed me. In the re-creation of the world, when the Son of Man will rule gloriously, you who have followed me will also rule, starting with the twelve tribes of Israel. And not only you, but anyone who sacrifices home, family, fields—whatever—because of me will get it all back a hundred times over, not to mention the considerable bonus of eternal life. This is the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first.'”
Matthew 19:27-30 (MSG)
The year 2021 begins tomorrow! I have a hard time imagining what it will be like. 2020 has been a tough year for most of us. I personally am sick of the words, “Pandemic, mask, social distance, and toilet paper shortage!” Keeping my peace in this craziness has been a real challenge. But then I think about what life might have been like for the common Hebrew in Jesus’ day (Roman armies in the streets, self-righteous church leaders, crooked tetrarchs, and crucified bodies hanging along the highways). Then I realize, I still don’t have it all that bad! I have so much to be grateful to God for.
Jesus spoke of “The Great Reversal” – things will be turned upside down. Those with wealth, prestige, and power in today’s world, and those who laugh and scoff at Christ and the values and lessons He taught, will stand in awe, as people they have never heard of are glorified. What an amazing day that will be! But it is sad that Peter did not yet understand that what he was getting was the greatest gift of all – eternal life. Lord, let me not take that great gift for granted either. If I never get one more good thing in this life, let that promise of getting to spend eternity with my Jesus be enough.
Will spending eternity with Jesus be enough for you?
We here at Katie Souza Ministries are praying for you, our great country, and for the year 2021 to be filled with hope, love, and blessings! Happy New Year!
