Sticks and Stones

Lesson 16

It is very easy to become offended. All of us have plenty of opportunities most days of our lives. People say hurtful things, do hurtful things and forget important things. They cheat, lie, undermine, back-stab and double-cross.

When I was on the street, it was common for criminals to rat on each other in order to obtain leniency for themselves. I was always fascinated by that, criminals turning in criminals.

I’ve seen families whose members seemed very close and supportive of each other go to war when a patriarch or matriarch dies, leaving an estate. It doesn’t even have to be a very significant estate. People fight over crazy items and wound each other deeply over stuff.

These wounds go right to the soul and soul wounds cause all manner of sickness and problems. In the last lesson, I showed how holding on to offenses can actually stop a move of God in your life. Read Matthew 13 again for a refresher on this point.

So, chances are you are offended even as you read this. If not, you certainly know someone who is, and there is a very good chance they are sick as a result of it. How, then, do you get free of this problem?

You need to repent. You need to forgive the person who offended you. You need to apply the blood because, in Leviticus 17 we learn, it’s the blood that atoneth for the soul. It’s the blood that washes away every sin that wounds your soul.

So, start with the blood always but don’t stop there. Our sins of offense make wounds in our souls and we need those wounds healed. The specific power that does that is dunamis power that comes from the Resurrection. Paul said in Philippians 3:10, “I want to know him and the power,[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][dunamis]of his Resurrection.”  “Dunamis” means “excellence of soul”. Dunamis makes your soul excellent. It heals the wounds caused by the sins of offense.

Sometimes we need both. Most of us learned to plead the blood and that is good. The blood of Jesus is necessary. But there is more available to you. Consider this example and ask yourself if it seems familiar. You get offended at somebody, really bothered, but, after a while, you feel convicted, so you pray, “Okay God, I’m sorry I’m offended at them. I repent for being offended and I forgive that person who offended me.”

You spend time in your closet, repenting and forgiving, repenting for being bothered, repenting for being offended and forgiving that person. And then what happens? You walk out of your closet, feeling really good about yourself. You think, “Okay, I did the right thing, the Christian thing.” Then, you get in your car and maybe drive to the grocery store. You walk in and there is the person who has been talking about you, the one who started the whole episode and immediately that spirit of offense is all over you again.

Why do you do that? Didn’t you just repent and forgive? Why does seeing the person trigger you again? Because you put the blood of Jesus on the sin, but you didn’t apply dunamis to the wound made by the sin of offense.  The wound is still there, causing you to feel angry at the person.

So you go back in your closet. “Lord, I’m so sorry. I can’t stop thinking about how much I dislike that person. I’m so sorry and I repent and forgive them again for the 15th time this month.” You go back into your closet over and over, feeling so convicted because you can’t stop being a hater in your mind. It’s because there is still a wound in your soul.

Stay in your closet; take hold of the blood from the cross and the dunamis power from the resurrection. Plead that over your soul just as much as you plead the blood. If you do, you will experience the power of dunamis inside of you. You will become what dunamis means, “excellent of soul”. Next time you see that person; you’ll be like, “Girlfriend! I love you. I know you love me too! I love you back!” And you’ll mean it.

In James 5:16, we find James telling us we need both the blood of the cross and the resurrection power.  It says, “Confess to one another therefore your sins, your offenses and you’ll be healed.” That’s repentance and forgiveness. James is laying it out for you. Repent. That means “to partake of the blood”.

Earlier, in verses 14–15, it says “Is anyone among you sick? He should go to the church elders and they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord’s name and the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick.” James is laying out the plan for you to get healed of your sins and your sicknesses, including the sins of offense. He says, “Go to the elders, have them anoint you with oil and then you’ll be made well.”

Is this telling us the olive oil coming out of a bottle will make a person well? There are a lot of oils in the world that have very strong healing properties. But here’s the thing, I think, when it says, “If you’re sick, go to the elders and they’ll anoint you with oil,” it’s talking about what the oil represents. The oil represents the anointing.

They used to anoint kings with oil. Anointing is a supernatural empowerment, a declaration of an office in the kingdom.

Now, you’re wondering where I’m headed with this point. Next week, I will let you know. It’s going to be exciting!

Meanwhile, if you are suffering due to the sin of offense, repent and apply dunamis power to your soul wound.

Your victory is close at hand.  Big Love, Katie[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
