Soul Under Construction

Lesson 16

Bible Truth – Sickness and Disease

This week is an important one for you in the process of soul healing. Don’t be surprised, as you are going through these steps, if you have thoughts of discouragement! Satan doesn’t want your soul healed.

The Bible says in 3 John 1 that we will be prospered and be in health even as our soul is prospered. Physical health is directly connected to soul health. Medical practitioners that aren’t believers, may tell you that 80% of serious diseases come upon people who have lived through elongated traumatic experiences or stress. So, even doctors say what’s going on in our inner man can cause us to become sick.

There are people described in the Bible who were sick in their physical bodies because of their soul wounds. The man at the pool or Bethesda is one example. In John, chapter 5, it describes the scene. There were always a lot of sick people gathered around the pool, waiting for an angel of the Lord to come and stir the pool. Those got in first, after the water was stirred, were healed of their diseases. In verse 5, it says “a certain man was there who had an infirmity 38 years.”

Does the Bible say what caused him to be sick? The word, “infirmity” in the Greek, from the Strong’s means, “weakness and infirmity of the body and of the soul.” The man was sick for 38 years because he had a wound in his soul. Where did he get this wound? It came from sin. How do we know? Because after Jesus healed the guy, He ran into him again at the temple and, in verse14, it is recorded that Jesus said to the man, “See, You have been healed, Go and sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

Jesus gave us insight with his statement. He tells us how that guy became ill. He had sinned and his sin had caused him to have an injury in his inner man, which made him infirm, not only in his soul, but in his physical body. So, wounds in your soul can make you physically sick.

They can also allow demonic spirits to afflict your physical body. In Luke 11, it says there was a woman Jesus saw at the synagogue when He was teaching, “who had an infirmity, a spirit of infirmity, for 18 years, and was bowed together and could in no way lift herself up but when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to the woman, ‘Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.’ He laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight and she glorified God.” This woman had an evil spirit that was literally bending her bones. It was bending her spine over. What could possibly give an evil spirit the right to do that?

The Bible shows us the answer. It says she had a spirit of infirmity for 18 years. That word, “infirmity” is the same word used to describe the man at the pool. Remember, it means “weakness and infirmity of the body and of the soul.” It was a wound in her soul that allowed a spirit to afflict her.

For the woman, there’s no indication a sin had wounded her. Jesus called her, “a daughter of Abraham,” meaning she was a righteous woman of God. So where did she get her wound? Perhaps she was traumatized. Perhaps she lived through some sort of trauma that wounded her and it had allowed a spirit to come and physically attack her body.

Do you see the importance of getting your soul healed? Keep pressing in with prayer. Next week, I will give testimonies of people whose souls were healed and saw their infirmities and diseases literally disappear!

Keep your faith raised. True healing and testimonies raise our faith and demonstrate the amazing power and compassion of Jesus!
