Interpreting What God Is Saying

Lesson 8

There are two sources I rely on to give me insight into the symbols I receive in my dreams. The first source is the Bible. The second source is a dictionary. Whenever you have a symbol in your dream or vision, you should go to the Bible first. We may see symbols and think, “That’s not in the Bible!” but will be surprised when we find that it is. There will be many symbols inside your dreams and visions that are in the Word. The Bible is specifically written to heal your soul. Therefore, “Receive the word that was planted in you that has the power to save your souls.” James 1:21 (NASB). “For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart (of your soul).” Hebrews 4:12 (AMPC)

I lie down in the morning after worshiping and praying in tongues and position myself to receive visions. There have been times I saw something and said, “What is that? I’m not even going to write that down!” I’ve learned my lesson! I might see something that looks completely ridiculous, and it will be a major key that will shift something in my life or ministry. So now, in obedience to God, I write down every vision I see. Then I simply go to the dictionary, look up the word, and I am shocked almost every time!

Sometimes I’ll think, “I know what that word means.” But, I’ll look it up anyway and as soon as I do, revelation just flows in. Understanding comes and all the pieces of the puzzle go snapping into place. I have had many visions come to pass (my journals are full of fulfilled revelation). I have called someone that I was getting a vision for and it would be exactly what was happening to them. I would decree over them and a miracle would come just by looking up words in the Bible or dictionary!

You might ask, why would God show us a modern day symbol like a car, a computer, or a can opener? Jesus spoke in parables using symbols – symbols that the people of His day could relate to. When Jesus talked about the Word of God being seed and about the Kingdom of God being a net let down to catch fish, the people around Him knew exactly what He was talking about because they were farmers and fishermen. That’s why God will sometimes use modern-day symbols to speak to us in dreams; He knows that we can relate to them.

Holy Spirit lives in us and He is able to direct us toward what a symbol means for us. We will know because, as we read through the list, we’ll feel a prompting, or a quickening. We may feel like the word got bigger and stood off the page. We might feel peace or be drawn back to that definition. The Holy Spirit will begin to point it out for us.

God speaks to each one of us in a unique language that we can personally relate to. We are all created by God to be unique. When God speaks to us in our dreams, He will keep to a Biblical standard. He will speak to us in a universal language that can be understood by many. However, He will also make sure that He speaks to us in a way that we can personally relate to. Let me give the perfect Biblical example found in Genesis 40 – 41: Pharaoh, the cup-bearer, and the baker! God used four different symbols that meant time; the cows, the vines, the breadbaskets, and the corn –symbols to represent time. Each one of them received a symbol that meant something very personal to them, something that they could relate to.

I had a dream – an accurate, prophetic dream that came to pass where casino tokens represented time. That was very personal to me at the time because I had lived on the streets and in casinos. I understood the concept of the casino token. “I spent that much money to get this much money.” So when we’re faced with a long list of definitions or scriptures we can rely on two things: Holy Spirit is going to point it out and make it personal to us.

God may use the same symbol over and over again in varying ways or circumstances, so we can begin to master that symbol. Later God will add another symbol so that our dream language will grow. That’s what happens to me in our meetings. God gives people symbols in their dreams that I’ve already developed an understanding of, so I am able to help them interpret what God is saying to them.
