Dethroning Strongmen In Your Life

“…how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? And then he will spoil his house” (Matthew 12:29).

Sometimes the demonic assault you are battling seems to have no end. Are you emotionally and spiritually exhausted? Even worse, no matter how much you fast, pray, rebuke, or intercede…nothing seems to break open or move, so at the end of the day you are still sick, in pain, worn out, and overwhelmed. What are we missing?

That was my story until God highlighted Matthew 12:29 to me. I had read it many times before and had tried to implement what Jesus said by commanding the strongman to be bound; yet, nothing changed. In fact, it only got worse.

When I looked up the meaning of the word “strongman” in Greek, it was like the heavens opened and the angels broke into song! According to Strong’s, it meant, “one who has strength of soul to sustain the attacks of Satan.”

I will never forget how much peace I felt when I grasped this revelation. Instantly, the cloud of confusion lifted, and faith flooded into my heart. I realized God was showing me how to reverse the decision that Satan had made against my life.

The Bible refers to Satan and his high-ranking officers as strongmen, but according to this definition, the key to overcoming their attacks is for us to become strong in soul.

I had discovered the secret as to why binding that strongman wasn’t working in this situation. I obviously had an unhealed or wounded area in my inner man that was giving the enemy legal right to attack me and continue his relentless onslaught. That is why I needed to pursue becoming strong in my soul, and then I would not only be able to cast him out, but also ransack his entire house!

I went to work immediately, but this time, I didn’t go to spiritual war by rebuking and binding the enemy. Instead, I began to spend extended periods of time worshipping the Lord and being in His presence.

The Gospel of John says:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing.” – John 15:4-5

Our connection to Christ is absolutely vital. In this passage, Jesus Himself tells us that fruit of breakthrough and victory is the result of “abiding” or pressing into this relationship.

During these times of prayer, worship, and soaking, I asked the Lord to heal my soul of anything that I had in common with the demonic strongman. I asked God to heal me of anything that gave the enemy the right to attack my life, and as I remained in the secret place, the Lord did just that. He strengthened my soul, and I was finally able to cast the enemy out. This time he went quickly, with no resistance whatsoever.

Since that time, I have used this simple, but powerful truth, to successfully overcome demonic attacks. Plus, I have taught this same Biblical principle to people all over the world. I have received countless testimonies that they have seen massive supernatural breakthrough in their lives as well!

In every army, there are high-ranking officers in authority over soldiers of lower rank. According to Jesus, the kingdom of darkness operates just like an army. It has different ranking demons, and some of them possess a greater measure of power and authority than others. Jesus called the superior-ranking spirits strongmen.

Have you ever noticed when you rebuke a demon in Jesus’ name, sometimes it leaves, and sometimes it doesn’t? Typically, we spend the majority of our time in battle against the lower-ranking demons in the dark kingdom. They are spirits like infirmity, fear, lust, confusion, and depression. Yet, even though we have the authority through the name of Jesus to cast these inferior ranks out, many times they stubbornly refuse to yield. Why does that happen?

Here are a couple of reasons for you to contemplate:

First, Jesus said in Matthew 12:29 that if you want to thoroughly ransack the strongman’s house, you must first bind the strongman. In order to get rid of every lesser spirit that is causing you sickness and torment, you must first bind the strongman that is over them.
You see, we have been conducting our warfare in the wrong order, working our way up the ranks. Instead, we need to start at the top and work our way down. Once the top dog is on the leash, the rest of the pack will easily go into the cage.

This truth can be seen in the story of David and Goliath. In this epic tale, Goliath says something that proves when you bind the strongman, the rest of the army underneath him will easily submit to you. Read this statement from Goliath, as he challenged the armies of God: “Choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we (meaning me and my army) will be your servants…” (1 Samuel 17:8-9).

Goliath was the strongman over the Philistines. Here, he admits that if he were defeated, then the Philistine army would have to submit to Israel, and that is exactly what happened. David slung a stone at the Philistine, which sunk into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. Then David raced over to the giant, grabbed his sword, and removed his head.

The removal of Goliath’s head symbolized the removal of his headship over the Philistine army. When that happened, the Bible tells us what took place next: “When the Philistines saw that their mighty champion was dead, they fled,” (Samuel 17:51).

When the Philistine army saw that their champion was dead, they didn’t rise up and say, “Let’s kick some Israelite butt!” No, they did exactly what Goliath said they would do. When they saw that their champion was dead and their covering was gone, they fled, WITHOUT A FIGHT!

This is a perfect example of what Jesus said would happen if we bind the strongman first. Then, and only then, will we be able to ransack his house!
Now, before you go off binding and rebuking strongmen, you need to make sure you have the strength and authority to do so. How do you get it? The answer is by receiving healing in your soul.

Evil spirits get their right to attack us from unhealed areas in our inner man. This includes strongmen. Just look at the meaning of the word strongman from Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance: “one who has strength of soul to sustain the attacks of Satan.”

Wow, according to the Bible, Satan and his high-ranking officers are strongmen, but in order for you to defeat them, you must be a strong man, too! Strong in soul, that is.  Your inner man must be healed for you to have dominion over every strongman! Jesus backs this up with this statement in John 14:30: “I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me.]”

Did you see that? Jesus said that Satan had no power over Him because He had nothing in common with Satan. Your spirit man has nothing in common with the enemy. It’s your wounded soul that does. However, when you get healed through the power of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus, then as a result, your soul will be strong, and you will have nothing in common with Satan and any of his strongmen. Thus, you will have dominion over them!

If you are in the midst of a battle, quit rebuking and binding those little demons because it isn’t going to work. Instead, get healed in your soul; then go right to the top where the strongman is.

Start by putting on some praise and worship music. Lift your heart up to the Lord by singing, praising, and exalting Him. When you feel His presence fill the room, repent of any sins you have in common with the strongman over the attack. Then ask the Lord to heal you of anything in your inner man that you have in common with the strongman by making you strong in soul.

Command the Dunamis power that you have in your spirit to flow into any wounded areas of your inner man. The word Dunamis means excellent of soul, and right now, you have a tank full of it that never runs out.

Use your faith to command that soul-healing power to flood into your inner man to make you excellent of soul.

Repeat this process until you feel the assault lifting or until you get a word from the Lord that you are healed of any wound you had in common with the enemy. After that (and only then), bind the strongman in the name of Jesus and cast him out! Also, don’t forget to ransack his house. Command every spirit under him to go, too, and to take their diseases and disorders with them! I bless you, and I decree you are a strong man! You are strong in soul!  Katie Souza
